Lady Bulldogs already
clinch a playoff spot

With three games still left on the schedule, the McGregor Lady Bulldogs have already clinched a playoff spot.
On Tuesday, McGregor was set to play Moody there. On Friday, they will host Bruceville-Eddy in the final home game, and next Tuesday they end the regular season at Clifton. The varsity girls’ games start at 6:15 p.m.
Last Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Crawford 62-37 at Pirate gymnasium. McGregor led 14-7 in the first, increased their lead to 31-13 by the halftime break, and went into the fourth quarter ahead 47-24.
McGregor had two girls with more than points. Sha Brown ended the night with 27 points and Destiny Kelley pumped in 22 points. More points came from Meghan Goff, four; ShaQuayla Henderson, four; Cylane Rogers, three; Angela Garrett, two. McGregor connected on 7 of 15 free throws.
The Lady Bulldogs notched another hard earned victory Friday night at home against Hamilton by a score of 65-43. The score was much closer than the first meeting between these two schools.
McGregor held a 17-10 lead in the first, 38-18 lead in the second, and a 54-26 leading margin to start the final quarter. The Lady Bulldogs only went to the line seven times, but made five of them.
Three in double figures were Sha Brown, 20; Angela Garrett, 16; and Meghan Goff, 10. Additional points were recorded by Destiny Kelley, six; Cylane Rogers, six; ShaQuayla Henderson, five; Tana Davis, two.
The victory assured the Lady Bulldogs a trip to the playoffs. McGregor’s record stands at 23-6 for the season and 7-0 in district.
Coach Kimberly Johnson pointed out that four of the six losses came against 4A and 5A teams in the Temple Tournament earlier this year.
“We’ve sealed up a playoff spot and that win Friday night at home was big,” Coach Johnson said. “Sha and Destiny both had great games against Crawford. They scored a total 49 of our 62 points and most of those points were scored inside the paint.”
Coach Johnson pointed out that the Lady Bulldogs had a good defensive games against Crawford and Hamilton. She was pleased that the bench is getting good playing time in during the second half of most of the games.
“Hamilton played us much tougher this time around,” the coach said. “We tried a new defense to help shut down the inside game and it worked.”
District standings through last Friday are:

McGregor’s Jayvee Gold girls team lost to Crawford 39-35 and were defeated by Hamilton 47-20.
In the Crawford contest, McGregor led in the first quarter 10-7, trailed by two, 19-17 at halftime; and found themselves behind 29-25 at the end of the third period.
Tana Davis was high point girl with 18 points, Cheyenne Lanmon hit the hoop for eight points, L Williams chunked in five, M. Ballard and M. Webb each scored two points.
In Friday’s game, K. Krueger scored nine points, followed by Ballard, four; Lanmon, three; B. Davis, three; Williams, one.

Junior High girls win over Moody

The McGregor seventh and eighth grade basketball girls were both victorious over Moody Monday night.
Coach Sandy Brown reported the seventh grade won 54-10 and the eighth grade came out on top 27-20.
“Our seventh grade team played a great game,” Coach Brown stated. “There were many steals in the game due to great defensive play.”
Scoring points were Micah Broughton, 10 points; Courtney Lopez, eight; Hailey Reineke and T. C. Irons, seven; Danielle Kelley, six. Scoring four points each were Sarah Ridling, Rosa Dominguez, Kaleigh Ripley, and Lexi Segars.
The McGregor eighth grade Lady Bulldogs won a close game against Moody by a score of 27-20.
The coach reported each girl on the team contributed to the win by scoring at least one point.
Danielle Garcia was high scorer with 10 points, Danielle Brisky and Savannah Ponce scored four each; Jessika Foit, Lori Jones, Kaleigh Green, and Chelsea Millsap scored two each; and Lacey Lynch swished the net on a free throw.

McGregor 8th grade wins tourney

The McGregor eighth grade boys basketball team has been very busy lately. the team recently won the Crawford tournament last weekend defeating West 43-42 in a nailbiter and then beating Crawford 43-34 in the finals.
In the West game, Holden Seward connected on 5 of 7 three pointers for a team high 15 points. Michael Reyes also scored in double digits with 13 points. Travis Allison scored seven points while Keith Reineke and Jose Solis each scored four points.
The team led 23-15 at halftime, but saw the lead disappear in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was back and forth with both coaches using all of their timeouts.
The Bulldogs held a five point lead with 15 seconds, but then saw three close calls go in the Trojan favor. Mcgregor was up by one with two seconds and had to defend an inbounds pass under the Dog basket. West had two chances at the buzzer to win the game, but their shot would not fall.
The championship game was also very close and competitive. The Dogs used a strong second quarter to lead at halftime 19-13. The Pirates stayed within striking distance in the second half, but the Dogs hit some key free throws in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
Reyes scored 12 points, while Seward hit three big three pointers for nine points. Allison contributed eight points, Reineke scored seven before fouling out, and Solis added six. Luke Pilant scored one point. Chris Fehlman did an outstanding job distributing the ball and getting everyone involved.
In district games the Bulldogs have defeated Hamilton 50-16 and Moody 36-25.
The Bulldogs are now 10-1 for the season and will play Bruceville-Eddy this Thursday in their final home game. The Bulldogs will play their final game of the year Monday in Clifton. A win in either game will give this team the district championship for the second straight year.

Seventh grade remains
undefeated in district

The McGregor seventh grade Bulldogs defeated Moody this past thursday by a score of 42-12.
Chris Hemphill had a season high of 17 points, Martin Chaires scored eight, Andra Smith pumped in six, Marcus Irons scored four, Justin Lorenz scored three, Raul Ontiveros and Eric Benitez both added two points each.
The seventh grade Bulldogs competed in the Crawford Tournament last Saturday. The Bulldogs were down 8-18 to West at the half in the first round. They made a run in the second half, but untimely fouls and turnovers caused the dogs to fall one point short losing by a score of 35-34.
Andra Smith and Marcus Irons led the scoring with nine points each. Erik Benitez and Chris Hemphill added six points each, Raul Ontiveros and Martin Chaires both scored two.
In the consolation bracket the Dogs defeated Crawford by a margin of 38-22. Andra Smith has a season high of 15 points. Chris Hemphill and Marcus Irons both scored eight points, Martin Chaires added four while Erik Benitez scored three. The Dogs are poised to make a run at the district championship with a record of 10-1 and undefeated thus far in district play.
