Gene “Bud” Clements

Gene Padgett “Bud” Clements, a cherished member of the Oglesby, Texas, community, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2026, at Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Hospital, following a brief battle with pneumonia. Born on May 13, 1934, in McGregor, Bud was the beloved son of Quata (Padgett) and Lonnie F. Clements.

Bud lived a life marked by service, dedication, and love. A proud graduate of McGregor High School, Class of 1952, he was known for his athletic prowess on the basketball and football teams. His academic journey led him to the University of Texas, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for geology, interrupted only by his honorable service in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. After returning, he completed his degree in geology and began a meaningful career with the Texas Workforce Commission, devoting countless years to helping others find employment and secure benefits.

On March 1, 1969, Bud married the love of his life, Maxine Stone. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, blessed with fifty wonderful years together. After retiring, Bud and Maxine settled in Oglesby, where they restored an old barn as their retirement home and enjoyed hours on the back porch watching the wildlife. They found joy singing in the choir at the Oglesby First United Methodist Church, where Bud was also an active member of the congregation.

Bud’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. A Master Mason for 69 years, a Shriner, and a member of the Oglesby Lions Club, he was deeply involved in organizations that reflected his generous spirit. His hobbies included woodworking, reading, and cheering on all University of Texas sports teams; pursuits that brought him much joy and relaxation.

He will be remembered for his quick wit and the warmth he brought to every family gathering. Bud’s legacy lives on through his cherished family: his sister, Carolyn Clements Skipper, and brother-in-law, Richard Skipper; his grandson, Derek Manning, and his wife, Nina; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan and Caitlin Manning. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his memory with love.

Bud was predeceased by his beloved wife, Maxine, his daughter, Linda Manning, and son-in-law, Mike Manning, as well as his parents and sister, Coleen Warren, and brother-in-law, Ken Warren.

Visitation will be at Cole Funeral Home, 1113 W. Fifth St., McGregor, Thursday, September 10, 2026, 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. The celebration of Bud’s life will be September 11, 2026, at 10:00 A.M. at the Oglesby First United Methodist Church, 109 College Ave. Interment with Masonic and Military honors will follow at McGregor Cemetery, 524 E. Windsor Rd. 

Pallbearers include Keith Warren, Keven Warren, Todd Skipper, Kris Fisk, Steven Ford, and Peyton Fisk. Honorary Pallbearers will be Lloyd Kortis, Mark Adams, Clem Kortis, Bill Shoaf, and Bob Ocano. 

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Terry Valdez, Bud’s long-time caregiver, for her unwavering support and compassion.

Gene Padgett “Bud” Clements will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were privileged to know him. His life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and love for family and community.
